Trailer Round-Up: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Rio 2, and More
This week’s Trailer Round-Up has a wide variety of different upcoming releases. You’ll find a fantasy sequel, an animated sequel, a comedy, and much more. However, don’t expect to see a new horror trailer (sorry!). In all, trailers for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Rio 2, Last Vegas, I, Frankenstein, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Sal, and The Invisible Woman are available below.
A new trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug released before this weekend’s movies. The cool part about the trailer is hearing Smaug’s voice! Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) is credited as Smaug, and the trailer also shows us more of Legolas (Orlando Bloom). Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, and more return to the movie which will release December 13th.
Rio 2, an admittedly much different sequel compared to The Hobbit, also released a trailer. Returning director Carlos Saldanha and voice stars Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, and Jamie Foxx, Rio 2 should be a fun movie. The problem is it won’t be available until April 11, 2014.
The second trailer for the star-studded comedy Last Vegas was released by CBS Films. The film stars some of our favorite older-generation actors, like Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, and Kevin Kline. The story of four older men hitting up Vegas one last time is directed by Jon Turteltaub (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and releases November 1st.
Moving from fantasy to animated to comedy and now to a thriller, I’ve attached the first trailer for Stuart Beattie’s (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) I, Frankenstein. The January 24, 2014 release stars Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and Yvonne Strahovski (Showtime’s Dexter). Some footage I personally saw at Comic-Con was in the trailer, but I’m still hoping for a little bit more. Given its release date, I hope it can outlive the January expectations. We’ll see.
The next Jack Ryan installment continues the variety. Technically the fifth movie in the franchise (behind The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present, and The Sum of All Fears), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is the latest to follow Tom Clancy’s (Rest in Peace) character. Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness) will be the latest to fill the role and Kenneth Branagh (Thor) will direct the movie set to release on December 25th.
James Franco has been all over the place this year. A new trailer for another movie he directed (he also did As I Lay Dying), titled Sal, came online after releasing in film festivals back in 2011. The biographical film about Sal Mineo, the first major actor to come out, stars Val Lauren (The Salton Sea) and finally releases in limited theaters November 1st.
Following Ralph Fiennes’ (Coriolanus) directorial debut back in 2011, he’s back for The Invisible Woman. It premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and this time takes on Charles Dickens’ life. Finnes stars at Dickens, and the film also features Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) and Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient). The movie releases in limited theaters December 25th.
That does it for this week. Please check back same time next week for the next round of trailers!
