Trailer Round-Up: Divergent, Maleficent, Noah, and More
It feels like we’ve been force-fed trailers for the latest 2013 movies lately. It makes sense, though, because those are the films that need the hype going into award season. However, with November already half over, I think it’s time to start looking to 2014. With today’s Trailer Round-Up, you’ll find five movies from next year, with only Out of the Furnace and Some Velvet Morning being from this year. The five for next year include Divergent, Maleficent, Noah, Cuban Fury, and Heaven is for Real.
Check them all out below!
The first quarter of next year looks pretty solid (all things considering) and Divergent is one of the primary reasons. The popular YA novel could turn out to be the latest piggy-back to The Hunger Games, but I’ve heard pretty great things about the series. While I still haven’t read the book, the inclusion of Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and director Neil Burger (Limitless) have me excited. Their latest work can be seen in the newest trailer. The movie releases March 21, 2014.
Disney’s Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley (Elysium), and Elle Fanning (Super 8), doesn’t release until May 30, 2014, but that didn’t stop it from releasing its first teaser. At 1:25, it’s a little more than the traditional teasers we get. Still, it’s hard to get a big grasp on the plot. Robert Stromberg’s dark fantasy film is an alternate tale about Sleeping Beauty’s infamous villain, meaning it’ll basically be an origin story for Maleficent.
To me, the biggest trailer splash came with the release of the first footage for the biblical epic Noah. Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) sure has taken his time to release a new movie, so fans of his (including myself) have been chomping at the bit for something new. The latest appears to be a doozy, and you can see part of Noah above! I’m still wrapping my head around the trailer, but with stars like Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, how can you not be at least a little excited?
Coming back to 2013, Out of the Furnace did some last second marketing with another trailer. It’s very much like a TV Spot but a bit longer. The action thriller (directed by Scott Cooper) has an impressive cast that includes Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone), Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, and Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler). Check out the trailer for more information about the film and to get a look at what appears to be a pretty bleak story. The movie releases in limited theaters November 27th before going wide on December 6th.
Going from dark action-thriller to a light romantic comedy, the first trailer for Cuban Fury released online this past week, too. Cuban Fury stars Nick Frost (The World’s End) and Rashida Jones (I Love You, Man) in what could be the oddest couple of the year. However, thinking about it, Jones also “dated” Chris Pratt in NBC’s Parks and Recreation so there’s that. We’ll see if Frost’s character actually nabs Jones’ character when the movie releases February 14, 2014.
Heaven is for Real, the adaptation of the Christian book (of the same name) that took the world by storm a couple years ago, debuted its first trailer, too. Starring Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) and Kelly Reilly (Flight), the movie is directed by Randall Wallace (We Were Soldiers). Set to land appropriately near Easter (the movie officially releases April 16, 2014), it’ll tell the story of a 3-year-old’s near-death experience and how he apparently visited heaven.
Just like last week’s Gimme Shelter clip, Some Velvet Morning doesn’t appear to have any connection to the popular song of the same name. Instead, the drama will tell a dark story about a man (played by Stanley Tucci) and his mistress (played by Alice Eve). If this sounds like your kind of movie, check out Neil LaBute’s (The Wicker Man) movie December 10th on Video On Demand or December 13th in theaters. You could also watch the trailer above.
Thanks for stopping in. Have a great week!
