Delivery Man Review – There But Not Quite
This question is for all you men out there, what would you do if you found out you had fathered 533 children? That’s the question Dreamworks’ latest movie Delivery Man starring Vince Vaughn tries to answer.
Based on the Canadian film Starbuck (you can read Jordan’s review of the film here) and directed by the same director, Ken Scott, Delivery Man introduces us to David Wozniak (Vaughn), an unmotivated and unreliable man, who discovers that his anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years earlier resulted in him fathering 533 children. When most of the children decide to file a class-action lawsuit to find out the identity of their biological father, David is faced with probably the toughest choice of his life and also presented with an opportunity to become a better man.
Let me first talk about some of the performances in the film. Vince Vaughn has some great moments and is in fact quite the perfect choice as the father for these kids because he can be so awkward around them, which makes for some great scenes.
I should also mention Chris Pratt, who plays my favorite character, David’s best friend, Brett. I literally gasped/laughed (glaughed?) at one of his scene towards the end and pay attention to his interaction with his kids, it’s priceless.
And the rest of the cast is also enjoyable to watch, although your attention will most likely be stuck on Vaughn and Pratt for the most part.
As for the story, I haven’t seen the original movie (although now I’m very curious to), so I can’t really make a comparison between two, however while Delivery Man is a very enjoyable and, at times, funny, I think it suffers from too many cliches to really make it stand out. From the beginning you know where the story is heading, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing (heck give me the typical lost in space movie anytime, I’m in), it also doesn’t surprise the audience.
With such an interesting and ridiculous (in a good way) set up, I was really hoping for Delivery Man to reach something more and become that unique comedy this year, but it doesn’t quite reach that level, at least not to me.
However, I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy myself, because I did and if you want a funny and entertaining movie for the weekend, this is definitely it. I mean come one, it’s about a guy who has 533 children!
Delivery Man is now out to theaters. You can watch the trailer below.
