News Round-Up: Johnny Depp Cast in ‘Black Mass’; ‘Tarzan 3D’ Release Date; Ron Howard’s Next Project; and More
After a full week of trailers, posters, and photos, this edition of News Round-Up is just as packed. In fact, I had to make some pretty severe cuts in order to make room for the biggest news of the week. Below you’ll find everything categorized in either Casting, Release Dates, or New Projects.
For casting, I’ll have information on Johnny Depp in Black Mass, Emma Watson in Regression, and Christoph Waltz in Tulip Fever. The lone release date news goes to Tarzan 3D. Lastly, check out Ron Howard’s new project, Mena, Robert Schwentke’s announcement as the Insurgent director, and Jonathan Levine’s team-up with 50/50 stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen in an untitled comedy.
Overall, it’s a pretty packed week!
Starting with Johnny Depp, the Pirates of the Caribbean will star in Scott Cooper’s (Out of the Furnace) drama. The movie, titled Black Mass, will be about Boston crime kingpin Whitey Bulger. Depp was apparently set to play the famous mobster before, but the deal fell through. Now with Cooper onboard, the project is moving forward once again. More info (co-stars and release date) isn’t available at this time. (Source: Deadline)
From Pirates of the Caribbean to Harry Potter, Emma Watson added to her schedule as well. The sought-after actress, who we will see next in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, joined Alejandro Amenabar’s (The Others) thriller. Regression, as it is named, will be distributed by the Weinstein Company, who are keeping details under wraps. A 2015 release date is expected. (Source: LA Times)
Christoph Waltz ends our casting section with his inclusion in the drama Tulip Fever. Directed by Justin Chadwick (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), the film will tell the story of a 17th-century affair. Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) and Alicia Vikander (The Fifth Estate) also star in the movie that is still without a firm release date. (Source: IndieWire)
Tarzan 3D, on the other hand, does now have a release date. The Warner Brothers film will release on July 1, 2016. This Tarzan iteration has plenty of connections with aforementioned projects. Harry Potter director David Yates is directing the film with the previously-mentioned Christoph Waltz among the stars. It’ll also feature Samuel L. Jackson and Alexander Skarsgard (Zoolander). If you are like me, you appreciate Ron Howard and his filmmaking projects. After last year’s Rush, his upcoming slate was left unconfirmed. It now appears he’ll be making a movie titled Mena. Not much more than the plot – the real-life story of 1980’s drug runner Barry Seal – is known at this time. We’ll update you with stars and a release date when they come online. (Source: Vulture)
Although Divergent has yet to hit theaters (it comes out March 21st), it was known that Neil Burger (Limitless) wouldn’t helm the second film in Veronica Roth’s book series. Two days ago, we found Robert Schwentke (Red) will take over. The sequel will return Shailene Woodley and Theo James with a reported release date of March 20, 2015. The third movie, for those wondering, will come out March 18, 2016. (Source: Deadline)
Jonathan Levine hit it big in 2011 with 50/50…at least critically. The cancer comedy (which doesn’t sound like it would work) starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen and eventually turned out to be my favorite movie of that year. Levine has since made the zombie love story Warm Bodies and was on the prowl for his next project. That prowl ended with the announcement that he’d re-team with JGL and Rogen for an “Untitled X-Mas Comedy” that’ll probably hit theaters next year. Having these three together is definitely a good idea, if we’re only to judge on the past. (Source: THR)
