News Round-Up: Jake Johnson Cast in ‘Jurassic World’; ‘The Wolverine’ Sequel Release Date; ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ in IMAX; and More
On this week’s News Round-Up, it’ll be heavy on “Misc.” news. Usually, I have a lot on casting and release dates; however, today I’ll only have Jake Johnson and Omar Sy’s names to add to Jurassic World and the release dates for The Wolverine 2 and the Fantastic Four 2. In other news, check out the IMAX news for Star Wars: Episode VII, Andy Serkis’ involvement in The Jungle Book, Prometheus 2 plans, and news on the Scarface and The Grudge remakes below.
Jake Johnson will reteam with Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow in Jurassic World. He wasn’t the only name added to the long-awaited Jurassic Park sequel either. It turns out Omar Sy (The Intouchables) will also appear in the movie alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard (Lady in the Water). The movie hasn’t started filming yet, but it’ll be out on June 15, 2015. (Source: IndieWire)
The only release date pieces I have include Sony’s superhero franchises The Wolverine and Fantastic Four. Both of these movies will come out in 2017 with The Wolverine 2 set for March 3, 2017 and Fantastic Four 2 set for July 14, 2017. I find it interesting that a second movie is in the plans years before the first (the first Fantastic Four reboot won’t release until 2015). Either way, at least we can put these in our calendars, right? (Source: LA Times)
Just like last week, I have another nugget of information for Star Wars: Episode VII. Although the film doesn’t have a solid lead yet, we found out this past week that J.J. Abrams’ (Star Trek) next Star Wars movie will come out in IMAX. This is a bit of good information, personally, because this keeps the large-picture format in relevancy. (Source: IndieWire)
If you’re a little confused about The Jungle Book news, I don’t blame you. News that actor Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings franchise) will helm the project probably had you wondering: what about Jon Favreau? It turns out there are two rival projects – one by Disney and one by Warner Brothers. So it’ll be Favreau (with Idris Elba starring) vs. Serkis eventually. Serkis’ version doesn’t have a release date or stars…yet. (Source: Variety)
Although it hadn’t been confirmed, a sequel to 2012’s Prometheus seemed all but guaranteed. Well, now it is guaranteed! Prometheus 2, which will be written by Michael Green (Blade Runner) and directed again by Ridley Scott, will (probably) grace theaters in March of 2016. It appears the plan also calls for multiple Michael Fassbender characters which has me particularly excited! (Source: The Wrap)
If you read this entire piece and thought “man, I don’t think we have enough news on reboots and remakes,” it is a good thing you’re still here. Both Scarface and The Grudge (very different franchises I know) are moving forward with reboots themselves! Both also got key pieces in their cogs with director announcements. Pablo Larrain (No) will direct the Scarface one and Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) will take on The Grudge. (Source: The Wrap, Variety)
