Trailer Round-Up: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hercules, Rio 2, and More
Welcome to yet another week. As we get closer to April, the newest trailers are almost exclusively for this year’s summer blockbusters. This includes wide releases like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hercules, Rio 2, Edge of Tomorrow, Jupiter Ascending, and The Purge: Anarchy. The last trailer, for a movie called Begin Again, is the lone non-blockbuster-y release. However, this is probably the film I am the most excited about of the bunch.
Scroll for the trailers and more information on each of the seven films:
While Michael Bay has been busy making the latest Transformers movie, he’s also been involved in the production for another adaptation of our favorite turtles. This year’s live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has already been perceived in an array of ways and this week’s trailer probably didn’t help. Outcry over the casting of Megan Fox mixed with the obviously CGI turtles has people (myself included) wondering if the movie will work. I think it helps that Will Arnett and William Fichtner (The Dark Knight) are involved, but we’ll see on August 8th for sure. Check out the teaser trailer for Jonathan Liebesman’s (Wrath of the Titans) film above.
Along with the first poster and new images, Hercules also debuted a trailer. I happened to catch it at this weekend’s release of Noah (check out my review here), and I am somewhat excited for this movie. Still “somewhat” is more than I figured I’d be when I heard Brett Ratner (Tower Heist) was making another adaptation Hercules’ story. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson definitely helps things, and he looks pretty awesome in the trailer above. Hercules releases on July 25th.
Carlos Saldanha’s sequel Rio 2 is the closest to release on this week’s Round-Up. In fact, the animated sequel comes out already on April 11th. Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, and more return their voices and you can hear their rendition of “I Will Survive” in the final trailer for the film above.
Another trailer also came out for Doug Liman’s (The Bourne Identity) action flick Edge of Tomorrow. This intriguing film could go either way when it releases June 6th. To me, it looks sort of like Tom Cruise’s film Oblivion mixed with RoboCop and Elysium. Emily Blunt (Looper) also stars in the film and you can judge the trailer for yourself.
Jupiter Ascending, directed by the Wachowskis (The Matrix), debuted a new trailer, too. Their film stars Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, and Sean Bean (HBO’s Game of Thrones). Expect to see this film starting July 18th.
In case you didn’t get your Purge helping last year, the sequel is on its way to theaters soon. With a quick turnaround, Universal is trying to capitalize on the franchise while it is still hot. With an undeniably cool concept, I can still see lots of potential. James DeMonaco returns as director while Zach Gilford (NBC’s Friday Night Lights) and Michael K. Williams (HBO’s The Wire) are newcomers. This one releases July 18th.
To mix things up, I thought I’d release a trailer for a “quieter” film. Titled Begin Again, the film may have been known to some as Can a Song Save Your Life? It is directed by John Carney, who made his name with the spectacular musical rom-com Once. Begin Again will follow some of the same themes, but star better known actors like Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, and even Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. As of right now, it is slated for a July 4th release.
See you tomorrow for the next Poster Mania.
