‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Movie Review – Go See It Already!
I’ll be honest, I didn’t really like the first Captain America movie. As a result, I was moderately looking forward to its sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Oh how wrong I was…
The movie takes place after the events of The Avengers movie. We find Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), aka Captain America, living in Washington D.C. and trying to adjust to his new life. Unfortunately, things never stay quiet too long and Rogers is thrust in the middle of an conspiracy and attack targeting one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s own. He soon teams up with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) to stop and expose the conspiracy that threatens the world. But first he’ll have to fight off the assassins sent to kill him and one in particular, the Winter Soldier might find harder to kill than he expected. He also finds a new ally, The Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
I haven’t read the comic book series the movie is based on, so can’t make any comparison to that, but let me tell you, it was one hell of a ride. Definitely one of the best Marvel movies to date.
Right from the opening scene which includes an action scene on a boat, it is clear that it’s going to be a great ride. Seeing Captain America in action reminds us why he’s a superhero and part of S.H.I.E.L.D. And that’s only the beginning. The action sequences keep getting better and better. I have one word for you: Elevator.
Driving the action, is the story, which really gets you involved and caring about what is happening. The mystery is compelling and will keep you engrossed until the very last minute. Speaking of the last minute, make sure to stay until the end of the credits for that special extra scene. The comic fans will surely be excited for that one!
On top of the action and story, we have the characters. Chris Evans is putting on the costume for the third time and it really feels like he’s getting more comfortable with the character of Captain America. He really embodies him perfectly and it makes for a better watching experience. Now I can’t wait to see what he does with it in the next Avengers and Captain America movies.
Another asset to the film is, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Out of all the movies her character has been in, this is the one she shines in the most. She is a crucial part of the story and the movie is better for it. We also learn a bit more about her, which I really enjoyed.
Newcomer Anthony Mackie doesn’t waste a second to fit right in as Sam Wilson/The Falcon. It’s like he’s been there all along and the chemistry between him and Evans plays wonderfully on screen.
Sebastian Stan returns in this movie as well, but since I didn’t know much about the character, I won’t spoil it for you if you don’t already know. All I’ll say is that it was great seeing him back.
As for Samuel L. Jackson, let’s be honest, can you even imagine anyone else being Nick Fury?
All in all, this movie just works. It has action, it has humor, it has a mystery and compelling story, great performances. The audience was going nuts when I went to see it at the press screening and that’s always a good sign.
Just do yourself a favor, go see it this weekend!
