News Round-Up: Leonardo DiCaprio Cast in ‘The Revenant’; ‘King Arthur’ Release Date; ‘Allegiant’ Split; and More
Some weeks I have more trouble wading through the week’s biggest news breaks. With a lot of speculation and rumor, it’s tough to know what is true and what isn’t. It is also tough to know what exactly is the most “important.” In this week’s News Round-Up, it became pretty obvious what moviegoers would think is most important. We’ve got Leonardo DiCaprio news, we’ve got Javier Bardem news, we’ve got directors like Guy Ritchie, Bryan Singer, and Adam McKay. We’ve got it all!
Specifically, you can find casting for Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant and Javier Bardem in The Last Face. For release dates, check out the set dates for King Arthur and Magic Mike XXL. For misc. news, read on to find out about the two-part plans for Allegiant (part of the Divergent series), the X-Men: Apocalypse returners, and the reunion of Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and director Adam McKay in Border Guards.
Since Leonardo DiCaprio is still (still!) awaiting his first Oscar, we should expect the sought-after actor to keep working his tail off. It was announced that DiCaprio would be directed by the brilliant Alejandro González Iñárritu (I think his best film is Amores Perros). Titled The Revenant, the film adaptation is set to start filming in September with an expected 2015 release date. Consider me excited! (Source: EW)
Javier Bardem, who collaborated with Alejandro González Iñárritu in Biutiful, will be adding to his filmography as well. Bardem has agreed to play a doctor in Sean Penn’s (Into the Wild) The Last Face (formally titled The Last Space). Charlize Theron (Prometheus) will co-star in the film that is still without a release date. (Source: IndieWire)
Guy Ritchie’s (Snatch) King Arthur will have to wait awhile to come out, but at least Ritchie fans (like myself) can mark their calendars. The blockbuster will hit theaters July 22, 2016. The latest King Arthur adaptation has been in the works since 2010, but we still don’t know who will be starring in the film. We’ll update you when we know more! (Source: THR)
Earlier, we found out that the Magic Mike sequel would be titled Magic Mike XXL. Now we know that the movie will be released on July 3, 2015. As if 2015 wasn’t crowded already, it looks like the Channing Tatum-starrer (fun fact: he’ll also help write the film) will vie for box office dollars. Greg Jacobs (who served as First Assistant Director for Magic Mike) will direct this one. (Source: Deadline)
Much to the chagrin of the hordes of Divergent fans, Lionsgate/Summit have announced they’ll be pulling a Harry Potter (…or Twilight…or Hunger Games) when they break up the final book in the franchise into two movies. Allegiant: Part 1 will come out March 18, 2016 with Allegiant: Part 2 set for March 24, 2017. Both cash grabs will star Shailene Woodley and be directed by Robert Schwentke (Red).
In the very competitive superhero universe battlefield, it is tough to remember which movies are releasing which sequels when. Previously, we found out that X-Men: Apocalypse was happening. We still don’t know a whole lot about the movie (that’ll probably become more apparent after X-Men: Days of Future Past); however, news came down that Apocalypse will star the three big stars from the “newer” generation of X-Men. This includes Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy. Since I love the X-Men films, this is undeniably good news! Bryan Singer will direct the movie and it is currently set to play on May 27, 2016. (Source: Yahoo)
Step Brothers 2 – whether this be good or bad – doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t see Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and director Adam McKay working together. In fact, there appears to be plans that these three are collaborating again! The comedy will be titled Border Guards and written by Jesse Armstrong (who hilariously penned In the Loop). A production or release date schedule is unknown at this time. (Source: IndieWire)
