News Round-Up: Jessica Chastain Cast as Marilyn Monroe; ‘Foxcatcher’ Release Date; ‘Mrs. Doubtfire 2’ Plans; and More
Another week, another News Round-Up. In this week’s edition, I’ll feature casting for Blonde (Jessica Chastain) and Men Who Kill (Michael B. Jordan). For the lone release date, I’ll update you on Foxcatcher’s U.S. release date. In the misc. news, I’ll have a bunch of stuff, including plans for Mrs. Doubtfire 2, a Flash Gordon movie (and possible franchise), a Barbie movie (and possible franchise), and the news of Ciaran Foy as director for Sinister 2.
Awhile back (four years ago to be exact), Naomi Watts exited a role that involved her playing Marilyn Monroe. I thought it’d be awhile (if ever) before we’d get a new star and a potential pulse for the film. Now it appears the great Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) will takeover as Monroe! Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) appears to be the director of Blonde (based on a novel), but a production date and potential release date are a ways off for now. The other big (or big…ish) casting news came down for Men Who Kill and the up-and-coming star Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale). Jordan currently doesn’t have any co-stars, but his schedule will be busy between this and his duties in the Fantastic Four remake and Rocky sequel. Keep an eye out for more details on Men Who Kill, including a director and release date. (Source: Deadline)
Although I only have one release date to pass along, it is definitely a big one. Well, big one for cinephiles because while Bennett Miller’s (Moneyball) Foxcatcher may not be a typical blockbuster (in terms of anticipation), it looks to be one of the bests, on paper, of year. The Steve Carell and Channing Tatum-starring sports drama will come out on November 14th. (Source: EW)
In case the news two week’s ago that a Goonies sequel wasn’t enough evidence, it appears no movie is safe from the sequel treatment. This includes Mrs. Doubtfire, as it now looks like Mrs. Doubtfire 2 is indeed happening. This sequel will apparently star Robin Williams and return director Chris Columbus some 21 years later. The script is done, so next up is a production date then a release date. We’ll keep you posted. (Source: TotalFilm)
In the age of superhero movies, it was only a matter of time before we got a Flash Gordon adaptation. That time is now, apparently, as Fox has plans to develop the comic book franchise into a feature film. Like a lot of other news pieces this week, this is still pretty far off, so expect news on a director, stars, and release date later. In fact, the only thing we do know is that writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3) are in charge of the script. (Source: THR)
…and to continue the potential franchise news, Sony is developing a Barbie franchise. Not a lot is known about this one either, but Jenny Bicks (HBO’s Sex and the City) will be in charge of writing the first film. Expect to hear more when stars, a director, and a release date are announced. (Source: Deadline)
The final piece of news I have involves director Ciaran Foy (Citadel) and his involvement as director of Sinister 2. After a financially successful first film, it was probably expected by most as a shoo-in for the sequel treatment (surprised?). Stars and a release date are to come. (Source: THR)
