News Round-Up: ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Cast Announced; Zack Snyder to Direct ‘Justice League’; and More
In this Thursday’s rendition of News Round-Up, I will be skipping the Release Dates subcategory completely. Instead, I’ll focus primarily on casting while including a few pieces of misc. news. For casting, the long wait for Star Wars: Episode VII casting news is finally over. Also, Ray Fisher will play Cyborg in the Superman vs. Batman movie, Amanda Seyfried joined Pan, and Hailee Steinfeld was added to Pitch Perfect 2. In other news, Zack Snyder comes back up with the confirmation that he’ll direct Justice League, Peter Jackson’s next Hobbit movie changed names (The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies), and Ron Howard added Harry Quebert Affair to his growing director to-do list.
More information for each specific news story can be found below.
On Tuesday, the biggest news of the week dropped. That news involved the confirmed cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. Up to this point, it’d mostly been rumored (with the exception of the returners). Some rumors did point to Adam Driver (HBO’s Girls) and Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis). These rumors were confirmed, while names like Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), and John Boyega (Attack the Block) are also featured in J.J. Abrams’ (Star Trek) anticipated movie. Their perspective roles aren’t known, but guesses are Driver will play the main villain. Episode VII comes out December 18, 2015. (Source: Deadline)
From one anticipated movie to the next, the mostly unknown stage actor Ray Fisher was cast as Cyborg in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel (unofficially titled Superman vs. Batman or vice versa). Zack Snyder will bring Superman (Henry Cavill) and Batman (Ben Affleck) to screen alongside primary villain Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) on May 6, 2016. We’ll have to wait to see how Cyborg plays into the whole thing. (Source: Yahoo)
Although Pan isn’t on the same level as the other two movies mentioned, Joe Wright’s (Anna Karenina) latest Peter Pan adaptation will likely be making a ton of money when it comes out. We already knew Hugh Jackman would star in the movie, but it now appears Amanda Seyfried (In Time) has joined the cast. Expect this one out July 17, 2015. (Source: IGN)
My final piece of casting involves the seemingly unstoppable Hailee Steinfeld. Not only did she break-out in a big way with True Grit, but she has starred in Romeo and Juliet, Ender’s Game, and 3 Days to Kill since. Now, she’ll be appearing alongside returners Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow in Elizabeth Bank’s Pitch Perfect 2. The musical comedy should release May 15, 2015. (Source: Variety)
I mentioned Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck earlier, and I expected there to be some controversy when it came to who would direct the Justice League movie. Snyder would be coming off back-to-back DC movies, but Affleck has proved to be an Oscar-worthy director. This past week, the controversy (or lack thereof) ended when Snyder was officially confirmed as the director. Affleck, Cavill, and others will return to this movie whenever it finally gets into production and releases. No official date is known yet. (Source: Deadline)
When it was announced Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies would release as a trilogy (instead of just two movies), it inadvertently made The Hobbit: There and Back Again title obsolete. Now the filmmakers and studio have changed it to The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. Check out Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, and the rest of the gang when Five Armies clash on December 17th. Last but not least is another project coming from the great Ron Howard (Rush). The esteemed director will put his talents to use on Harry Quebert Affair. Not a lot is known about this project except that it’ll be a murder mystery based on the popular novel. Check back for stars and a release date. (source: Variety)
