News Round-Up: Halle Berry Cast in ‘Kidnap’; ‘Point Blank’ Remake Release Date; ‘Godzilla’ Sequel Plans; and More
In this week’s jam-packed News Round-Up, deep cuts were made to get it down to the seven biggest stories. In the casting department, the only piece I have involves Halle Berry joining Kidnap. The only release date piece I have is for the Point Break remake. The bulk of the news pieces came from directors as Kathryn Bigelow (True American), the Coen Brothers (Hail Caesar), and Todd Phillips (Arms & The Dude) all lined up new projects. Lastly, I have a bit about early plans for a Godzilla sequel (go figure) and the official title, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, of the Man of Steel sequel.
If you missed out on this week’s trailers, posters, and photos, check them out!
Halle Berry will be seen by millions this weekend in the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, she’ll also be seen (much) later on in a movie called Kidnap. Luis Prieto (Pusher) is set to direct the movie with a release date to be determined. Berry will apparently play a mother that stops at nothing to get her kidnapped kid back. Has potential, right? If you didn’t know there was a Point Break remake, you likely didn’t know there was a release date either. The movie (which also confirmed Edgar Ramirez will replace Gerard Butler) will apparently be hitting theaters August 7, 2015. As if 2015 wasn’t packed enough already, right? Anyway, Ericson Core (Invincible) is the director of the remake. (Source: ScreenRant)
If you’re like me, Kathryn Bigelow is one of your favorite directors. Although she had work before The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, it’s been her recent work that put her on the shortlist of best working directors. It turns out she’ll be teaming up with Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) for a post-9/11 drama titled True American. The movie will be based on a true story and the film has a yet-to-be-determined release date. (Source: Variety)
The Coen Brothers are another team that I look forward to see what they’ll put out next. News came down this week that they’ll be directing a pic called Hail Caesar. This one will tell the story of a man that was paid to spy on celebrities to get dirt in the 1950s. Like the others, stars and a release date aren’t known yet. (Source: Deadline)
The last directing bit reteams director Todd Phillips with Hangover star Bradley Cooper (who will produce the pic) in Arms & The Dude. The movie is rumored to feature Jonah Hill and will center on two stoners that turn into big-time arms dealers. Official news, such as stars and a release date, are a ways out still. Since last weekend’s Godzilla was a massive hit (check out my review here), plans of a sequel (even if premature) shouldn’t be surprising. That news came down this week as a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ film is currently being fast-tracked. Good job Hollywood, we have another franchise! It’ll be interesting to see where they take the story, including the characters, actors, and crew. We’ll keep you updated! (Source: Deadline)
To finish things off, I wanted to update you on the official title for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel. Technically this probably doesn’t fall under the “New Projects” category, but it seemed better here than anywhere else. Ever since last year’s Comic-Con announcement, names like Batman vs. Superman and Superman vs. Batman have been floating around. However, it was announced yesterday that the official title will be Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. For me, I’m glad Batman gets top-billing but that’s just because I’m biased. The title also plays into the eventual Justice League movie. Snyder will direct Dawn of Justice with Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill starring. I’m counting down the days until May 6, 2016 when this movie releases. (Source: EW)
