Clip Mania: Maleficent, Edge of Tomorrow, 22 Jump Street, and More
Happy Friday! As we inch closer to June, May’s last Clip Mania features four movies over the next three weeks. This includes wide releases like Maleficent (out today!), Edge of Tomorrow, 22 Jump Street, and Earth to Echo. I’ve attached a new clip for two Cannes films, Clouds of Sil Maria and Grace of Monaco, as well. As you can see, this week’s post is short on movies, but that is only because of the volume.
Check out all the clips below and make sure to click over to this week’s trailers, posters, photos, and news breaks.
Maleficent, Disney’s latest, comes out today (or last night if you went to a preview showing). If you’re on the fence about seeing it, I’ve attached two clips touting its release. Robert Stromberg’s directorial debut stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning (Super 8), and Sharlto Copley (Elysium). Check them out above!
Next weekend (starting June 6th) will see the release of Doug Liman’s (The Bourne Identity) Edge of Tomorrow. Marketing has been pretty active for this film – maybe because the movie has tracked pretty poorly – so I’m not surprised to see four new clips. In my opinion, the movie has the starpower (Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt); however, the premise seems over people’s heads. The clips may help. Watch them above if you get a chance.
Following the trend, 22 Jump Street will release a week after Edge of Tomorrow (on June 13th). Phil Lord and Chris Miller return as directors with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum also reprising their roles. I really enjoyed 21 Jump Street, so I can’t wait to see what this movie has to offer. A clip, titled “Twins,” is available for your viewing pleasure.
Earth of Echo debuted a new clip as well. Dave Green’s film has been described as a Steven Spielberg rip-off by some and I can definitely see it in the footage I’ve seen so far. However, I (like everyone) shouldn’t discount the film quite yet. Check out a clip for the sci-fi film that releases on June 2nd and stars newcomers Teo Halm and Brian Bradley.
As Cannes wrapped up, one of the talked-about films was Clouds of Sil Maria. I’ll admit I didn’t know a whole lot about this film before the line-up was announced, but now it is fully on my radar. Olivier Assayas (Something in the Air) directed the pic with names like Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass), and everyone’s favorite – Kristen Stewart – involved in the project. Check out the clip if you want to get a glimpse of the film. It’ll hit theaters December 1st here in the U.S.
I’ve also included a clip I found for Grace of Monaco – another Cannes participant. To be honest, I’m not sure how new this clip is, but I know this project has some steam behind it. If nothing else, the movie has a meaty role for Nicole Kidman as she stars as Grace Kelly herself. Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction) will play her husband (Prince Rainier III). Olivier Dahan (Ghost River) directs the movie that is still awaiting a U.S. playdate.
Have a great weekend everyone!
