News Round-Up: Lupita Nyong’o Added to ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’; ‘Jupiter Ascending’ Pushed Back; More ‘Star Wars’ Spin-off News; and More
Wow! What a week for news releases! I had to make some severe cuts to this week’s edition in order to make this thing not two-thousand words long. I ended up including a bit of casting, a release date update, and a few new directing gigs.
More specifically, I have the latest casting for Star Wars: Episode VII (adding Lupita Nyong’o), Allegiant/Insurgent (adding Naomi Watts), and Guardians of the Galaxy (adding Josh Brolin’s voice). I’ll also have the news about Jupiter Ascending moving back to 2015. Lastly, I’ll talk about Josh Trank’s involvement in a Star Wars spin-off, Bill Condon’s involvement in the live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation, and Roland Emmerich’s involvement in a new Stargate adaptation. All the information is below!
It was huge news when the Star Wars: Episode VII cast was officially released awhile back. However, it appears they weren’t quite done firming up the entire cast. That was evidenced by Oscar-wnning Lupita Nyong’o’s (12 Years a Slave) addition this past week. News also released that Gwendoline Christie (HBO’s Game of Thrones) has joined J.J. Abrams’ hotly-anticipated film. Episode VII releases on December 18, 2015. Production is already underway and I am practically counting down the days until its release.
From one franchise to another, it was also announced that Naomi Watts (The Impossible) has joined the Divergent franchise. She’ll appear in the second, third, and fourth installments (Insurgent, Allegiant – Part 1, and Allegiant – Part 2). As for her role, she’ll play Four’s (Theo James) mother. The three movies release (in order) on March 20, 2015, March 18, 2016, and March 24, 2017. (Source: The Huffington Post)
Although Guardians of the Galaxy is seemingly just around the corner (it releases August 1st), they’re still adding to their cast. Josh Brolin (Oldboy) – or his voice at least- joined as Thanos. News broke this week, and I think his addition to James Gunn’s (Super) film is definitely a good thing! (Source: MTV)
The lone release date piece I have involves one of the biggest summer (er..ex-summer) blockbusters, Jupiter Ascending. The Wachowskis (The Matrix) were gearing up for a release this summer, but the film has now been pushed back to February 6, 2015. The film will star Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis when it does finally release. (Source: THR)
We recently found out Gareth Edwards would be helming a Star Wars spin-off, but the buck doesn’t stop there. In fact, Josh Trank (Chronicle) is set to direct the other spin-off. At this point, we don’t know a whole lot (including stars or a release date). However, Trank’s involvement is a good sign in my opinion. (Source: EW)
As Disney starts to look ahead after the big release of Maleficent, they’re shifting to yet another live-action story. This time they’ll be tackling Beauty and the Beast. This adaptation has tapped Bill Condon (The Twilight series) as the director. We’ll update you on stars and release date when they release. (Source: Variety)
Finally, I’ve got news of Roland Emmerich’s (Independence Day) Stargate adaptation. Add this one to the endless list of reboots and remakes I guess. Emmerich has been an up-and-down director, but his name being attached will at least generate buzz. At this point, like the others, we’re still waiting on production and casting details.
