News Round-Up: Jason Momoa is Aquaman; Steven Spielberg Release Dates; ‘Scooby-Doo’ Reboot; and More
Following yesterday’s pictures, Tuesday’s posters, and Monday’s trailers, Thursdays are all about news here at Film Equals. Today’s post focuses primarily on release dates – I’ll update you on Steven Spielberg’s next two films as well as new release date schedules for Paramount and DreamWorks. I’ll also talk about Jason Momoa (who joined Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice), Tom Hiddleston (who joined I Saw the Light), and Rebel Wilson (who joined Grimsby). The final piece of news will involve a possible Scooby-Doo reboot.
Check everything out below!
Perhaps the biggest news of the week is the official announcement of Aquaman in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Jason Momoa (HBO’s Game of Thrones) will play the iconic character when the movie hits theaters May 6, 2016. It’ll star Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill with Zack Snyder directing. (Source: Yahoo)
Speaking of superheroes, Avenger’s star Tom Hiddleston is set to play Hank Williams. It appears Hiddleston will even go as far as to sing like the iconic country star. The movie is titled I Saw the Light and Marc Abraham (Flash of Genius) is scheduled to direct. Check back for a release date. (Source: Deadline)
The last bit of casting involves Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids). She joined Grimsby this week – the James Bond parody that will co-star Sasha Baron Cohen. Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me) is directing this one that is going to come out July 31, 2015. (Source: Comingsoon)
Although Steven Spielberg is a fan favorite, he hasn’t had a project in the works since Lincoln back in 2012. Lucky for us, his schedule (which had become pretty crowded) got cleared up a bit. His still untitled Cold War thriller will release on October 16, 2015 with The BFG (a Roald Dahl adaptation) set for July 1, 2016. (Source: THR)
Paramount has been busy setting their schedule as well. Yesterday, they announced Star Trek 3, Paranormal Activity 5, Transformers 5, G.I. Joe 3, and Hansel & Gretel 2 (all sequels as you can see) will hit theaters in 2016. Paramount can expect a lot of money that year. (Source: Collider)
Similarly, DreamWorks Animation has been marking their calendars. They announced playdates for Captain Underpants (January 13, 2017), The Croods 2 (November 3, 2017), Madagascar 4 (May 18, 2018), and Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves (November 2, 2018). It is quite a bit in the future, but I thought I’d still pass it along. (Source: Collider)
Last, but certainly not least, is news of a potential Scooby-Doo reboot. It seems like every week has some bit about a reboot, so chalk up Scooby-Doo as this week’s. Information is still sparse, but we do know that Randall Green is reworking the character and that’ll apparently be a live-action movie. (Source: Comingsoon)
