News Round-Up: Sandra Bullock Cast in ‘Our Brand is Crisis’; David Yates to Direct ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’; and More
Welcome to another Thursday edition of news updates. On today’s News Round-Up, I’ve balanced casting with directing duties and added some misc. news at the end. For casting, I’ll have information on Sandra Bullock (joining Our Brand is Crisis), Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Day (joining the Vacation reboot), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (joining The Cellar). For directing, I’ll touch on David Yates (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and John Moore (I.T.). In the misc. department, I’ve got IMAX news for The Maze Runner and the purchase of Maggie by Lionsgate.
It wasn’t the biggest week for casting, but I did want to pass along that Sandra Bullock joined Our Brand Is Crisis. This one is the next by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) who has been on quite the roll lately. Green’s film will be based on the 2005 documentary (of the same name) but doesn’t have a release date yet. (Source: EW)
I also wanted to pass along news that Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Day (of all combinations) are apparently going to star in the Vacation reboot. Hemsworth isn’t exactly known for his comedic chops but I am excited to hear about these two. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein wrote and will direct the film that’ll star Ed Helms with cameos from some of the original Vacation stars (like Chevy Chase!). So far there isn’t a release date. (Source: Comingsoon)
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) also added to her schedule. Winstead will star in Dan Trachtenberg’s small budget thriller The Cellar. Microbudget films have shown success in Hollywood so we’ll have to keep tabs on this when it does release (no date is known yet, though the film will shoot this fall). (Source: Comingsoon)
Just when we thought Harry Potter was done…the franchise vehicle kept going. Although the spinoff, titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, won’t be directly related to the events in the Harry Potter franchise, I have no doubt the movie will do really well. David Yates (who did a lot of Harry Potter directing) is set to officially sign on as director…another great sign for the franchise. Stars and a potential release date aren’t known yet. (Source: E!)
Coinciding with the release of the Pierce Brosnan-starring The November Man (out yesterday) came news that John Moore (Max Payne) will direct Brosnan in I.T. The story will apparently follow a successful publisher and a young I.T. consultant that have a falling out. A release date isn’t known for this one either. (Source: Deadline)
The Maze Runner is set to come out September 19th, we already knew that. However, we didn’t know it was going to come out in giant IMAX screens. Wes Ball’s film adaptation will hit IMAX screens at the same time. For those that don’t know, Dylan O’Brien (High Road) and Will Poulter (We’re the Millers) star in the film. (Source: THR)
Lastly, the zombie flick Maggie (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin) was purchased by Lionsgate with an early 2015 release date eyed. The movie is already finished and was set to play at the Toronto International Film Festival; however, they’ve decided to bypass the festival now. Add this to the ever-growing list of movies next year! (Source: ScreenRant)
