News Round-Up: ‘Magic Mike XXL’ Cast; ‘Zombieland 2’ Plans; A ‘Tetris’ Movie; and More
After an exciting week of new trailers, posters, and photos, today is all about the news. More specifically, this post is almost primarily about new casting. Below you’ll find casting for Magic Mike XXL, Colonia, Now You See Me 2, the Angry Birds movie, and The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials. For other news, I do have something on Zombieland 2 and a Tetris movie (you read that right).
Check it all out below.
Although there was a lot of casting, I felt like I should start with the largest (pun intended!). Magic Mike XXL – the sequel to the somewhat surprising hit Magic Mike – added Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover (NBC’s Community), Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), and even ex-football star Michael Strahan. Channing Tatum is the biggest name coming back (but Matthew McConaughey won’t be reprising his role, unfortunately). Gregory Jacobs directs the pic which just started production this week. Expect to see this (and a whole lot more, if you know what I mean) on July 1, 2015. (Source: Comingsoon)
Next up is the always-lovable Emma Watson. The Harry Potter star recently added Colonia to her upcoming schedule. She’ll join Daniel Bruhl (Rush) in the 1970’s-based political thriller. Florian Gallenberger (Shadow of Time) serves as director, but we’re still waiting on a release date. (Source: The Guardian)
From one Potter alum to another as it appears Daniel Radcliffe has joined Now You See Me 2. This seems odd to me but I think Radcliffe is trying to distance himself from Harry Potter as much as possible. He’ll soon be starring in Horns which seems like quite the turn. As for Now You See Me 2 (which will be directed by G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s Jon Chu), Radcliffe will apparently be playing Michael Caine’s son. Pretty awesome stuff! The sequel hits theaters June 10, 2016. (Source: JoBlo)
Angry Birds is next as they also unveiled their voice cast. The app-to-movie adaptation (you don’t hear that everyday) will feature voices from Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses), Peter Dinklage (HBO’s Game of Thrones), Bill Hader (Hot Rod), and more. Feral Reilly and Clay Kaytis will co-direct the movie that should crash into theaters on July 1, 2016. (Source: IGN)
From one Game of Thrones star to another, I’ve got casting news about Aiden Gillen. He’ll be taking a villainous role in The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials (the sequel to last month’s biggest YA adaptation). Wes Ball will be directing this with Dylan O’Brien reprising his role. (Source: Collider)
In the misc. department, we’ll start with revitalized news about Zombieland 2. After stalling out for awhile, the sequel appears to be undead after all (okay, that pun sucked). Anyway, director Ruben Fleischer hopes to return but we’ll have to wait on some actors/actresses. We’ll also have to wait on a release date. (Source: Deadline)
The last piece of news involves a potential Tetris movie. As ridiculous as it sounds, it does look like this isn’t a joke. There’s certainly a precedent for brand movies so I guess this makes sense. As of now, there aren’t details about a director, stars, or a release date. (Source: NBC)
