News Round-Up: ‘Suicide Squad’ Officially Announced; Paul Greengrass to Adapt ‘1984’; and More
In today’s News Round-Up, you can fully expect to hear a lot about casting. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing since movies like Suicide Squad, X-Men: Apocalypse, Zoolander, Inferno, and The Peanuts Movie are the ones being talked about with names like Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, Oscar Isaac, Penelope Cruz, and Felicity Jones attached as some of the stars. As for the rest of the news, I again have news about Paul Greengrass (who will direct 1984) as well as a bit on Channing Tatum’s directorial debut (Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock).
Also, check out the latest trailers, posters, and photos if you missed those.
The biggest news of the week is the news that broke most recently. It’s been rumored for some time now that Will Smith, Tom Hardy, and Jared Leto would be leading Suicide Squad alongside Jesse Eisenberg (who will play Lex Luthor). That rumor turned into fact as all three actors have signed on to play Deadshot, Rick Flagg, and The Joker (respectively). While there are certainly people up-in-arms over The Joker following Heath Ledger’s performance, I am at least intrigued by Leto’s casting in particular. We’ll see how great they do in David Ayer’s (Fury) DC film which will debut on August 5, 2016 in 2D and 3D. (Source: Deadline)
Oscar Isaac has been making a name for himself as of late. Not only did he star in the terrific film Inside Llewyn Davis, but he’s about to be seen J.C. Chandor’s (All is Lost) A Most Violent Year. Most notable, however, is his inclusion in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which just released a trailer). Now Isaac will play Apocalypse in Bryan Singer’s next X-Men film (aptly titled X-Men: Apocalypse). The movie is set to release on May 27, 2016 and will again star Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. (Source: THR)
Once considered a dead project, Zoolander 2 gained a lot of steam recently with the announcement that Penelope Cruz would be joining the comedy sequel. Star Ben Stiller is set to reprise his role as the titular character and will direct the movie as well! Unfortunately, we don’t know yet if Will Ferrell or Owen Wilson will be back. We also don’t have a firm release date, so expect to hear more soon. (Source: TIME)
This past week, I finally got to see The Theory of Everything which co-starred Felicity Jones. Her performance was one of the strongest parts of the movie (and yes, it was a good movie) making me excited to hear she’ll be joining Inferno. The third film in the franchise (where the novels were penned by Dan Brown) will release October 14, 2016 with Ron Howard returning as director and Tom Hanks returning as star. (Source: IGN)
There’s been plenty of marketing for The Peanuts Movie (based on Charles Schulz’s iconic comic strip) but until last week, we didn’t have a voice cast. Even though I haven’t heard of any of the voice cast members, I did want to quickly list them. Noah Schnapp will voice Charlie Brown, Hadley Belle Miller will voice Lucy, and AJ Teece will voice Pig-Pen in the movie that releases November 6, 2015. (Source: Comingsoon)
Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) will apparently be adding another 1984 adaptation to the mix. Even though it looks like he’ll be shooting at least one movie (the latest Bourne adaptation) before he tackles the critically-acclaimed classic, I still think Greengrass is a good choice. At the point in time, we don’t know who will star or when the movie will release. However, I did want to pass along what we had so far. (Source: IGN)
Channing Tatum, who has been on a hotstreak lately, will apparently be taking his talents to the director’s chair. Last week it was announced that he’d co-direct Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock – an adaptation of the YA novel (by the same author as the source material for Silver Linings Playbook). Tatum will be helped by collaborator Reid Carolin and we can expect more (like stars and a release date) later. (Source: THR)
