News Round-Up: Daniel Radcliffe Casting; December Release Date Shuffle; Ben Affleck’s Next Project, and More
It’s the nature of the beast for News Round-Ups to be all over the place. However, this week is extraordinary because not only do I have three notable casting updates (Daniel Radcliffe in Gold, Emile Hirsch in a John Belushi biopic, and Jamie Dornan in Fifty Shades of Grey), but I have release date updates for five movies (The Monuments Men, RoboCop, American Hustle, Wolf of Wall Street and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit). On top of that, I’ve attached the newest pertaining to Ben Affleck’s untitled next project and Joseph Kosinski’s plans to reunite with Tom Cruise in Go Like Hell.
Make sure to look back on this week’s trailers, posters, and photos, too.
Happy Halloween!
Daniel Radcliffe will be reuniting with the man who gave him his first real gig after Harry Potter. Radcliffe will star as Sebastian Coe in Gold. The Woman in Black director James Watkins will be in charge of directing the story about the 1972 Olympic rivalry between Coe and Steve Ovett. Other stars and a release date aren’t known quite yet. Emile Hirsch was surprisingly cast as John Belushi in the upcoming biopic set to film next spring. The still untitled project (which may go by the book titled ‘Belushi’) will be directed by Steve Conrad (The Promotion) with a release date presumably next year. More information on this project later I’m sure. (Source: Deadline)
If you didn’t know, Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) dropped out of Fifty Shades of Grey, returning people to the edges of their seats waiting for a replacement. That replacement was announced this week with Jamie Dornan (ABC’s Once Upon a Time) filling the void. Sam Taylor-Wood’s (Nowhere Boy) movie will release August 1, 2014. (Source: EW)
Christmas is a fun, but stressful, time for movies. I don’t remember being this stressed out last year, but maybe I’m just misremembering. With the recent shifts, you shouldn’t feel bad if you lost track of what is releasing when. It all starts with The Monuments Men, which bowed out of the 2013 competition last week. It’s now received a firm February 7, 2014 date. When David O. Russell’s (Silver Linings Playbook) American Hustle heard this news, it jumped up from Christmas to December 18th. RoboCop, on the other hand, decided to move back five days to February 12, 2014 to avoid George Clooney a little. While we’re here, I might as well mention Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit decided to move back to 2014 (and it’ll now release in IMAX), allowing room for Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street to land a prime Christmas Day release date. I hope you wrote that all down. (Sources: Collider, EW, Collider)
Ben Affleck (Argo) – one of Hollywood’s hottest and most sought-after directors working today – appears to have another film planned. The untitled movie will be set in Africa, star Affleck, and tell a story of moral ambiguity when it comes to hunting down a ruthless warlord. Sound like a movie he’d be perfect for? I agree. Other actors and a release date timeline are still in the works. (Source: Deadline)
Finally, I wanted to mention Oblivion director Joseph Kosinki and Tom Cruise are set to reunite for Go Like Hell. Details (like others involved and a potential release date) are still hazy. However, we do know that unlike the sci-fi movie that brought them together first, Go Like Hell will be a racing movie taking place in the 1960’s. This shouldn’t be confused with a racing movie in the 1970’s that just released. Oh Hollywood. (Source: The Wrap)
